Learn how the German habit of Lüften can also be a simple spiritual room cleansing ritual. Try a 7-step practice to clear stagnant energy
A funny Instagram video about Germans and Lüften gave me the idea for this post. I immediately thought, I need to write about this, because Lüften is such a simple ritual for getting rid of stagnant energy in the house.
I know if a German reads this, they will probably laugh or think, Why is she writing a blog post about Lüften? But from my experience here in Canada, not everyone is familiar with this very normal daily ritual in Germany.
In Germany, Lüften is a very normal part of daily life—and it is done in any weather.
There is no exact direct English translation for Lüften, but in Germany it means intentionally opening windows (and sometimes doors) to air out a room, refresh the home, and let fresh air move through the space.
But here is the beautiful part: Lüften can also be a simple daily form of spiritual room cleansing—even if many people do not think of it that way.
When we open the space, let stale air out, and bring fresh air in, we often also shift the feeling of the room. Heavy energy can lift. The room can feel clearer, calmer, and more peaceful.
If you have ever walked into a home and felt that something was “off,” and later learned the people there had a hard time or stress in the house, then you already understand what I mean.
Sometimes, a simple Lüften can already help release that stagnant energy.
Lüften means opening windows (and doors, if possible) wide to let fresh air move through the room or home. In German, we often say: Lass frische Luft rein—which means: “Let in fresh air.”
It can be:
In Germany, this is often just a normal daily habit.
But it can also be done more intentionally.
For example, when a room gets smoky after cooking, many people naturally open the window and “sweep” the smoke out with their hand. That same action can be used intentionally for spiritual cleansing too: opening the windows, sweeping out stagnant energy, and inviting freshness back in.
Spiritual room cleansing is a way of releasing stagnant energy in a space.
This heavy feeling can build up from:
When you practice Lüften intentionally, you are doing more than just letting in fresh air—you are also helping clear stagnant energy.
You are also:
Even people who are not spiritual often say things like:
That shift is exactly why Lüften is such a wonderful bridge between the practical and the spiritual.
Lüften is such a normal part of my daily life that I often don’t even think about it. I do it even when it is extremely cold outside. Sometimes it is so cold that I cannot open the windows because they are frozen. Then I open the door for a moment—not too long, because nobody wants the whole house to get cold.
But I also use Lüften intentionally before and after spiritual sessions, often together with other cleansing methods I teach in my course “Spiritual House Cleansing.”
For me, Lüften is both:
Sometimes it is just opening windows and doors.
Sometimes it becomes more intentional: I open the windows, sweep the energy out with my hands (or a small broom), and imagine all stagnant energy leaving the room while fresh air filled with clarity and peace comes in.
I also combine Lüften with other methods like:
If you want to learn deeper methods beyond Lüften, I teach this step by step in my beginner-friendly course: Spiritual House Cleansing.
This is an easy practice you can try today.
First, feel the energy in the room or house. Just take a moment and become aware of how the space feels.
Open the windows wide. If possible, open doors too, so the air can move through the room or home.
Even a short time helps, but around 10 minutes is a good starting point (adjust for weather and your home situation).
You do not need anything complicated.
You can quietly say:
Use your hands (or a small broom if you like) and gently sweep toward the open window or door.
Imagine you are moving out:
This can be soft and simple. You don’t need to force it.
Pause for a moment and feel the fresh air coming in.
You can quietly say:
Imagine the air is carrying:
Let the room fill with that feeling.
When you are done, close the windows (if needed) and take one breath.
You can simply say:
Take a moment and feel the energy again after this little ritual.
Notice what changed.
That’s it.
Simple. Practical. Powerful.
You do not need to do it perfectly. Intention and consistency matter more than perfection.
This is perfect:
You can say this while opening the windows or sweeping out the energy:
“I release heavy energy and welcome clarity, peace, and fresh light into this space.”
If you want something even simpler:
“Out with heaviness. In with peace.”
Lüften can be done anytime, but these are especially powerful moments:
This is one reason I love it so much: it fits naturally into real life.
Sometimes we feel it right away, and sometimes we ignore it.
Here are a few signs a room may need cleansing:
You do not need to overthink this. If a room feels off, that is enough reason to cleanse it.
Yes—and that is exactly why it is so beautiful.
It is simple, accessible, and natural.
For some people, it is just fresh air. For others, it is also an energy reset.
Both can be true at the same time.
You do not need expensive tools. You do not need a perfect ritual. You can start with what you already do in daily life and make it more intentional.
That is often where spiritual practice becomes real.
I always like to keep spiritual practices grounded.
Please use common sense and adjust to your situation:
Spiritual cleansing can support your well-being, but it should always work alongside practical care and safety.
Lüften is a German word for opening windows (and often doors) to let fresh air move through a room or home.
It can do both. Fresh air changes the physical feeling of a room, and many people also notice a shift in mood, tension, and overall atmosphere.
No. You can simply treat it as a calming home reset. If you are spiritual, you can add intention and make it a cleansing ritual.
No. Lüften works on its own. Tools can be added later, but they are not required.
That is completely fine. Open what you can safely open. Even one window and a simple intention can help.
Do a shorter Lüften. You do not need a long time for it to help. Even a few minutes of fresh air exchange can shift the room.
As often as it feels right. Many people do it daily. I personally use it at least twice a day, and also before or after spiritual work or after stressful moments.
Both. Before a session, it helps prepare the room. After a session, it helps refresh and clear the space again.
Yes. This is one of the best times to do it. Lüften can help release the heavy feeling and bring calm back into the home.
Lüften is a wonderful foundation because it is simple, natural, and something you can start today.
