Discover the spiritual meaning of colors and why you feel drawn to them. Learn how colors influence energy, intuition, and chakras.
Colors are everywhere in our lives.
We see them in nature, in art, in clothing, and in the spaces we live in every day. But colors are not only visual. Many spiritual traditions believe that colors carry energy and symbolism.
Have you ever wondered:
In this article, we explore the spiritual meaning of colors, how they influence energy and emotions, and how you can work with colors intentionally in your life.
The spiritual meaning of colors refers to the idea that different colors carry symbolic energy and emotional influence.
Many spiritual traditions connect colors with different qualities of consciousness and energy.
For example:
These meanings appear in traditions such as chakra teachings, meditation practices, and energy healing systems.
One reason I became interested in the spiritual meaning of colours was through learning Reiki and working with the chakras.
Did you know that when you give yourself Reiki, you can ask which colour would be especially helpful for you that day during your Reiki session?
Another reason I became curious about the spiritual meaning of colors was a simple personal question: Why do I like wearing black?
I know that, scientifically speaking, black and white are not colors in the same way as the colors of the rainbow. However, in art, symbolism, and spiritual traditions, they are often treated as colors because they carry strong meaning and energetic associations.
Over the years, I heard many different opinions about black.
Some people say that wearing black is spiritually negative or heavy. Others say that black is protective, grounding, and even powerful.
I also noticed while browsing Instagram that some people say it is brave to wear black because it attracts all kinds of energies, which may not always be good. Others say that wearing white can attract the dark side.
Confusing, right?
This made me curious.
Can a color really be spiritually “good” or “bad”?
The more I explored this topic, the more I realized that colors are not fixed rules. They are often symbolic, personal, and deeply connected to how we experience energy in our own lives.
Many people notice that their favorite colors change throughout life.
I know this from my own experience. When I was younger, especially in my twenties and thirties, I loved wearing orange. To me, it felt energetic, joyful, and fun.
At that time, I was not really thinking about the spiritual meaning of colours. It was simply the color I felt drawn to.
That was also a time when I had my first two children, and maybe orange gave me some of the energy I needed to manage two boys, a job, and family life.
A color that once felt perfect may suddenly feel less interesting, while another color suddenly feels very attractive.
This may happen because colors sometimes reflect:
For example, someone who needs calm may feel drawn to blue or green. Someone who needs courage may feel attracted to red or orange.
Sometimes your intuition simply guides you toward the color your energy needs most.
Below is a simple overview of common spiritual associations of colors.
These meanings appear in many traditions, although interpretations may vary.
Black is often misunderstood spiritually.
While some people associate it with negativity, many traditions see black as a color of protection, strength, and deep mystery.
Black may represent:
This is one reason many people feel comfortable wearing black.
White is often connected to:
It is commonly used in meditation and spiritual ceremonies.
Red represents vitality and action.
It is associated with:
Red is often connected to the root chakra.
Orange symbolizes:
It encourages movement and expression.
Yellow represents:
It is connected to the solar plexus chakra.
Green is one of the most calming colors.
It represents:
Green is associated with the heart chakra.
Blue symbolizes:
Many people experience blue as very soothing.
Indigo represents:
It is linked to the third eye chakra.
Purple is often connected with:
It is often associated with the crown chakra, similar to white and gold.
A closely related shade is violet, which many people especially associate with spiritual transformation, purification, and higher awareness. In energy healing, violet is often used for releasing old energy and supporting transformation.
Colors also influence the spaces where we live.
Today, many homes use neutral tones such as grey or beige. These can create a calm and minimal style.
But personally, I enjoy having many colors in my home.
For me, colors bring life into a space. Different rooms can carry different energies depending on the colors used.
For example:
Choosing colors intentionally can help support the energy and purpose of each space.
If you know about Feng Shui, you can also bring that knowledge into your choices, although that is not the main focus of this article.
At the same time, I believe color choices in the home are very personal. What matters most is that the colors feel right to you and create a good feeling in your space.
Colors are often used in spiritual practices such as:
Some people imagine colored light flowing through their body during meditation. Others choose colors intuitively in their clothing, healing work, or surroundings.
Often, your intuition will guide you toward the colors that feel right.
I personally love working with violet light. In many spiritual traditions, violet and purple are closely related and are both associated with transformation, intuition, and higher consciousness.
I also like to ask intuitively, “What colour would be helpful for this area or for this kind of work?”
For example, I often use violet light for forgiveness and gratitude work, because to me it carries the energy of transformation.
After energy healing sessions, I sometimes like to visualize white light as a final flash of cleansing and balance.
Another color I enjoy working with is gold, which for me represents protection, strength, and higher guidance.
These are just some examples of the colors I personally enjoy using in my spiritual practice. It is not always the same color for every situation, because I really like to follow my intuition.
Still, violet, white, and gold are three colors that I work with quite often.
In many spiritual traditions, colors are connected to the chakra system, where each energy center corresponds with a color.
Working with chakra colors during meditation can help you become more aware of your energy and emotional balance.

👉 Spiritual Significance of Colors
It is another way of exploring this topic and may give you a little more inspiration around color meanings and spiritual symbolism.
Different colors are often associated with different energies.
For example:
But the most important thing is always your own intuition and how you personally experience color.
Many people believe that being drawn to certain colors reflects emotional or energetic needs. For example, someone seeking calm may feel drawn to blue or green, while someone looking for confidence may prefer yellow or red.
I remember when I learned Reiki a long time ago, my teacher said that if you have a sore throat, you could wear a blue scarf. She also said that in the past, our grandmothers often had white bed sheets. I remember her asking why that might be. Her explanation was that white reflects all colors of light, so in that sense it can feel especially pure, balanced, and supportive for sleep and healing.
I always found that very interesting.
Of course, spiritual ideas about colors do not replace medical care or advice from a doctor.
Colors can influence mood and emotional responses. This is why colors are used intentionally in design, meditation, and spiritual practices.
Purple and indigo are often associated with spiritual awareness and awakening, especially in traditions that work with the chakra system.
White is also often connected with spiritual awakening, because it symbolizes purity, clarity, and divine or universal light.
Some spiritual teachings describe awakening experiences as moments of brilliant white or golden light.
No. Many traditions see black as protective and grounding. The meaning of color can vary depending on personal experience and cultural interpretation.
The more important question may be: How do you feel about it? What does the color mean to you?
If wearing black feels comfortable, strong, or protective to you, then it may simply be a color that supports your energy.
Colors can influence us in subtle but powerful ways.
They can affect our mood, our environment, and sometimes even our intuition.
But most importantly, colors are very personal.
A color that feels grounding to one person may feel heavy to another.
Instead of following strict rules, it is often best to listen to your own intuition.
If you feel drawn to a certain color, there is probably a reason.
Sometimes the colors we choose simply reflect what our energy needs at that moment in life.

May the colors you are drawn to bring you healing, insight, and joy.
