Here’s an easy way to make learning Tarot card meanings simpler: start by understanding the basic meanings of the numbers 0 to 10.
Once you know these, reading both the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana becomes much easier because their numbers are closely connected.
Hi, my name is Daniela, the heart behind GateLightElearning.com.
In this video, we’ll focus on the Major Arcana, starting with the first 11 cards. Learning these is a key step toward understanding the meanings of Tarot cards.
Here’s a quick tip:
1 represents the beginning, and 10 represents the result. The numbers in between show the steps of the journey to get there. This applies to both the Major and Minor Arcana. The numbers 1 to 10 in the Major Arcana can also be seen as advice cards—but you’ll learn more about this in our Tarot online course on my website.
Let’s dive in!
By the way, what I’m about to share is part of our online course, The Art of Tarot Card Reading, which I lovingly crafted with my daughter Lina for you.
So, let’s start.
You have learned that the Major Arcana are all numbered. There is a reason for it, because Tarot also includes Numerology. Now, the good thing is, we only use the Numbers from 0-10. What you need to do here is, to remember some very short hints for each number. And when you do this, you will feel way more confident in reading the Tarot cards than ever before.
Let’s get to the point.
At first think of the 1 and 10. 1 is the start and 10 is the outcome. Everything between leads step by step - or number by number - to the outcome.
But first we start with the Zero, which means birth.
0 means Birth.
The fool has the number 0 and is essentially an innocent baby. He is supported by his heavenly and earthly parents. This is easy to remember.
The number 1 means a New Beginning, Chances and Opportunities.
The Magician with the number 1 is the heavenly father of The Fool. He gives the Fool willpower, inspiration, and all the tools in his hands to start from the beginning. You could remember that the number 1 inspires you to take the opportunity to begin something new.
The number 2 stands for Cooperation, Partnership and Choice.
The number 2 represents the High Priestess, the heavenly mother of The Fool. She gives the Fool guidance, wisdom, and love. She teaches him about intuition and patience. You could remember the number 2 by thinking of coming together —for example, if you find a partner, you are now two people, like a couple. And of course, you have to trust your intuition when entering a partnership, and you often need patience as well.
The number 3 means Expansion, Growth, Groups, Birth, and Initial Achievement.
The Empress, with the number 3, is the earthly mother of The Fool. She creates a foundation for new seeds. You could remember the meaning of the 3 by that you and your partner - (2 people) expand to 3, maybe a child, or a pet. You have a little family.
The number 4 stands for Security, Structure and Manifestation.
The Emperor, with the number 4, is the earthly father of The Fool, and he brings order and stability. To remember the meaning of the number 4, just think of the 4 walls of a home for your little family. You want security for your family.
The number 5 stands for Instability, Challenges, Conflict, and Activity outside of the home.
The Hierophant with the number 5, is the teacher who helps you learn about life and its challenges. It is about trust, honesty, and finding the meaning of life. To remember the meaning of the number 5, you can think about the life experiences outside of the four walls or outside of the home. There is much to learn. There may be difficulties, but there are new people who will assist you in learning through both good and bad experiences. They are all teachers.
The 6 stands for Communication, Problem-solving, Decisions, and Harmony.
The Lovers with the number 6 stand for love, communication, following the heart, and making decisions. To remember the meaning of the number 6, you could think about communication. To keep a good relationship with your partner and other people, you need to learn to communicate and to follow your heart when making decisions.
The number 7 stands Noble Goals,Spirituality and finding Knowledge.
The Chariot with the number 7 stands for setting out and departure. The number 7 is found in a lot of mystical or spiritual teachings. To remember the meaning of the 7, you can think about a time in life, where you want to find out where your place is in the World.
The number 8 is about Action, Change, Movement, Accomplishment and Regeneration.
The Strength card has the number 8 and symbolizes vitality, passion, instinct, and learning how to handle or tame the inner strength (like taming an inner animal.) To remember the meaning of the number 8, think of inspiration to change things and that you want to get out there and do whatever you have to do.
The number 9 means Change, the Final push before completion, Attainment, and Fruition.
The Hermit with the number 9 is looking deep within himself to learn and to change so that he can bring this light out to show others the way. To remember the meaning of the number 7, think of a final push before the fulfilment of life. You have almost reached the number 10.
The number 10 stands for Success, Completion, Outcome, the End of a cycle, and Renewal.
The Wheel of Fortune with the number 10 stands for completion and a turning point in life, good or bad, where you may not have an influence. It is simple to remember the meaning of the number 10 because it is the final number, the result, outcome, or success.
If you learn the numbers and their meanings, you will get a lot of information for your readings, and it will help you with the 56 Minor Arcana as well.
