Learn why Tarot readings differ and how each reader develops their own Tarot language through intuition, symbolism, experience, and personal connectio
This can feel confusing, especially when you are new to Tarot. You may wonder, “Which meaning is right?” or “Am I reading the card wrong?” But Tarot is not always that simple. Every Tarot reader develops their own Tarot language. When I first learned Tarot from a professional reader in Germany, she once asked me to do a reading for her. I felt nervous, but I shared what I saw in the cards and tried to create a clear message. Then she shared her own interpretation. Her reading was not completely different from mine, but it was not exactly the same either. At first, this made me feel insecure. I wondered if I had missed something or if my interpretation was wrong. But over time, I began to understand something important: Different does not always mean wrong. Tarot is a symbolic language, and every reader brings their own experience, intuition, knowledge, and way of seeing into the reading. There are many reasons why Tarot readers may interpret the same card differently. Every reader brings their own life experience, spiritual path, culture, beliefs, and emotional understanding into a reading. One reader may see a card through a spiritual lens. Another may see it through psychology, mythology, storytelling, or everyday life experience. The artwork on the cards matters. A card from the Rider-Waite-Smith deck may feel very different from the same card in a modern, abstract, animal, or fantasy Tarot deck. The image can change what stands out first, and this can influence the message. Over time, readers build their own relationship with the cards. A card may carry a traditional meaning, but it may also have a personal meaning for the reader because of past readings, life experiences, or intuitive impressions. This is part of how a reader’s Tarot language develops. The same card can speak differently depending on the question. For example, the Two of Swords may speak about a difficult decision in one reading, but in another reading it may point to emotional avoidance, needing more information, or not being ready to choose yet. The card is the same, but the situation changes the message. Imagine two readers pull the Three of Wands. One reader may see it as a card of expansion, opportunity, and looking ahead. Another reader may focus more on patience, waiting for results, and trusting that something is already in motion. Both interpretations can be meaningful. They are not necessarily contradicting each other. They are simply emphasizing different parts of the same card. In my own Tarot readings, I like to bring different layers together. I look at the card image, the suit, the number, the general meaning, my first impression, and the feeling I receive intuitively. I also pay attention to the question being asked, because Tarot is not only about the card itself. It is also about the moment, the person, and the energy around the reading. If you are new to Tarot, try not to worry too much when your interpretation differs from someone else’s. Instead of asking, “Am I wrong?” you can ask: What did I notice first? What feeling did the card give me? What part of the image stood out? How does this card connect to the question? This helps you build confidence and trust your own Tarot language. If this topic interests you, I created a deeper Tarot teaching where I explain how to trust your intuition, use first impressions, and combine suits and numbers in a simple way. Want a simple daily Tarot practice that helps you understand one card with more confidence, without overwhelm? Over time, Tarot becomes less about finding the one “perfect” meaning and more about learning how the cards speak to you. That is where confidence begins.Have you ever wondered why two Tarot readers can look at the same cards and still give slightly different interpretations?
